The mission statement for the Center of Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI) states that all learners will have equitable access to educational opportunities in a manner that renders distance transparent. Through the use of Elluminate, CDLI has seen great success in making this happen.
Each year, CDLI teaches in approximately 113 Schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Around 950 students are enrolled in 1650 courses taught by 35 E-Teachers. Courses are at the high school level and include all sciences, advanced and academic math, English and French, history, fine arts, and even technology and skill trades courses.
Elluminate Live!® is the "bread and butter" tool used to deliver these classes and most are recorded for students who missed the session or for review. Students also have access to extracurricular activities through with Elluminate Live! They can also attend presentations on post-secondary opportunities, regardless of where they are located in our province.
CDLI teachers can attend staff, committee, and subject-area meetings on a regular basis via Elluminate, without traveling outside their communities. Teachers can also attend and facilitate professional development opportunities from home, school, or anywhere in the province, country, or world with Elluminate Live! They can even access Employee Assistance Programs offered by their association.
Distance education students in Newfoundland and Labrador have achievement results that are comparable to students taught in a regular classroom setting. They perform equally well on our public exams, win scholarships, and move into post secondary education with great success. In short, CDLI has made distance transparent, and Elluminate Live! has been an essential tool in making that happen.
Elluminate Live! continues to allow me, as a virtual teacher, to do all the things that I could do as a face to face classroom teacher but so much more! The ability to rapidly share any software application or document with my students while at the same time gaining private feedback and questions from students in the class are now everyday occurrences in my virtual classroom.
