The School Board of Broward County (SBBC) understands the literacy skills needed to be successful in today's global economy. In an effort to educate its students, Broward County Public Schools seek and implements the latest innovations in instructional technology. Through the district-wide purchase of Elluminate technology, the county has been able to recapture students who did not pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) reading subtest by offering them an alternative to face-to-face instruction and a more personal form of online instruction.

Using Elluminate Live! virtual classroom, students:

Worked on FCAT preparation and test-taking strategies
Participated in lessons via interactive whiteboard, imported PowerPoint slides, and shared documents
Explored Florida Department of Education's FCAT information pages
Reviewed released tests, test specifications, and cognitive complexity of test items

Along with offering students various educational opportunities, the SBBC has also expanded on the concept of eWorking by incorporating Elluminate Live! into department meetings, email communications, and other daily peer collaborations.

"My students left high school defeated and with only a certificate of completion because they did not pass the FCAT reading subtest. Elluminate Live! enabled me to motivate them to try again. The virtual classroom experience created life-long learners in the students as well as with me. The students realized that they were successful in this learning environment and are seeking other academic courses offered in this format."
