Elluminati Conference Sessions
Ian Smissen, Institute of Teaching and Learning, Deakin University, Australia
Deakin University is a large, multi-campus university with a history of
providing quality on-campus and distance education and for more than ten
years we have utilized a range of online technologies to enhance teaching
and learning. We now have more than 33,000 students, all of whom utilize
online systems in their study. In 2005 we incorporated Elluminate
Live!
into our suite of online technologies. In this presentation, I will
discuss a range of ways in which Elluminate Live! is being used to
provided enhanced teaching options, improved communication between
students and faculty, better collaboration among students and library,
research, academic skills support for distance students.
Nicola Jayne and
Steve Rowe, School of Commerce and Management at the Lismore campus of Southern Cross University, Australia.
While indicating the rate of adoption for teaching during the first 14 months at a regional Australian university, the presentation will report strategies adopted for delivery and student support in the Quantitative Analysis for Business undergraduate course. The particular focus will share results and invite comment about the successful intervention for students who needed to undertake a re-sit examination. The re-sit was offered (as a result of a new university policy) to 62 of over 400 students who had enrolled for the course across several geographically dispersed campuses and in distance mode at the end of semester 1, 2006. The results show a significantly higher success rate for those undertaking the re-sit who attended additional support sessions using Elluminate in the lead up to the examination.
Karen Kennedy, University of Texas at Dallas
This Elluminate Live! is used extensively to teach all of the graduate-level certificate courses for the Executive and Professional Coaching Program at The University of Texas at Dallas. Elluminate is also used for "Office Hours" and student orientations. Each instructor uses Elluminate in their classes with student representation in at least ten states, and faculty representation from even more. This session will review how Elluminate is currently being used at The University of Texas at Dallas and will showcase the success that we have seen.
Bob Clougherty, Institute for Technological Scholarship, the Tennessee Advanced Computing Technologies Institute
Using a tablet PC and Elluminate Live! an instructor can create three sections using three modes of delivery from one teaching session. The instructor can teach in a classroom and have a second section linked in in the synchronous environment as well as push out recordings of the course to a Course Management System for an asynchronous online course. Using a multi-model course structure, work load is decreased for the faculty member while increasing the range and scope of their delivery.
Darrin Cheney, University of Kansas Medical Center
The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) adopted Elluminate in 2005 to enhance access and opportunity for quality health science curriculum. Currently KUMC faculty use Elluminate in both their "on-ground" and "online" courses and seminars to build a community of learners and to provide access to instruction from a distance. For these reasons, Elluminate is a key component of our new Nursing PhD program. Another exciting example is expanding access and opportunity for residents to participate in weekly "Grand Rounds" from 1 to 4 locations using Elluminate. An extra benefit is that the sessions are recorded and available for playback at any time. Not only has this increased attendance, but it has assisted the School of Medicine in meeting an accreditation requirement to have active participation from all residents.
This presentation will explore these experiences and focus on the challenges, strategies and successes of working with various faculty, departments, and administrators to accomplish their goals.
During this 30-minute presentation, the presenter will explore:
- Examples of using Elluminate in the health science curriculum.
- Strategies for working with various groups including faculty, IT support, administration, and Instructional Designers to integrate Elluminate into classes, departments, and the University.
- How to identify Political "bombs" and how to diffuse them.
- Processes to consider in faculty and student training and support.
Dr. Marti Cleveland-Innes and
Robert Hambrick, Learning Technology Services at North Carolina State University
Learning is an inherently emotional experience—the anxiety and challenge of solving complex, ill-structured problems; fear of the unknown; intimidation of emerging technologies; the joy of success; and pride in personal growth. This session will examine online teaching methods that acknowledge the role of emotion among students and the benefits of social presence through the use of synchronous tools. Participants will review and discuss the research of emotion in learning by Damasio (1995) and LeDoux (1996), and receive effective strategies to create social presence for teaching and learning at a distance.
