Students Across Three Continents Collaborate Online, Create Solutions to Combat Global Warming
Calgary, Alberta, Canada, (December 7, 2006) —
Elluminate, Inc., a leading provider of live eLearning and Web collaboration software,
announced today the launch of Fire & Ice, an online classroom series through which
junior high school students from three continents participate in a collaborative project
to address global warming issues in local areas. Today, more than 100 junior high
school students from Brazil, Mozambique and Canada logged on to Elluminate's collaborative
eLearning software, Elluminate
Live!® to participate in a project to address global
warming issues in local areas.
Participants included two Canadian schools — Langevin Science School from Calgary and
Lakefield College School based in Ontario — three schools from remote parts of
Brazil, and one school from Mozambique. The project objective was for students to
collaborate and recommend one activity each school could implement in 2007 that would
help combat climate change in their local areas. As a result, these students proposed
actionable ideas such as tree planting in devastated areas and energy-saving initiatives
in their schools.
"Global warming discussion forums are common these days, but what usually lacks is the
translation of dialogue into action," said
Stace Wills, director
of corporate development for Elluminate. "Each Fire and Ice school has developed a plan
that is executable and realistically achievable in their local region. And since all
collaborative sessions are held online, they've already effectively reduced the CO
2
emissions that would have been caused by flights to each respective area."
Today's Fire and Ice event is a sequel to a pilot project held in August. Event organizers
included Elluminate, the University of São Paulo, and Oi Futuro — the not-for-profit
arm of Brazil's largest telecom company, Telemar. The entire live collaboration component of
the project took place online using Elluminate
Live!, which allowed teachers and
students to collaborate using a virtual classroom environment that closely replicated the
experience of a face-to-face classroom. The software works on connection speeds as low as
28.8 kpbs and includes such tools as Voice-Over-IP, video, direct messaging and a shared whiteboard.
Components of Fire & Ice
The project began two weeks ago with a kickoff event, where students presented background
information on their school and community, as well as research showing the causes and
effects of global warming in their local areas. A few examples include the air pollution
and high CO
2 emission levels caused by cars and factories in Maputo, Mozambique's
capital; and deforestation and desertification in the states of Sergipe, Amazon and Massambara,
Brazil.
Next, schools were divided into three groups based on native language: English and Portuguese.
In these groups, students were challenged to collaborate and brainstorm one activity that
each school could implement to combat a specific global warming issue in their area.
A final event was held today, during which each group presented their recommendations and
fielded questions from the other schools. Translators were provided to cross language barriers.
"This project was just a small sample of what can be achieved by the world when our youth works
together," said Tarsila Sangiorgi Rosenfeld, project coordinator and spokesperson from the
University of São Paulo's School of the Future. "I wish everyone would have the
same opportunity to experience this type of initiative. Next year, all of us can gather
again to see the difference we've made to combat global warming and create a better world.
I really believe that these children's efforts are making a difference."
Students Propose Innovative Ideas for Environmental Preservation
As a result of the Fire & Ice final presentation, participating schools devised a series of innovative action items to positively effect the environment in their areas:
- A remote school in Brazil's Amazon region, Escola Maria Ivone de Araújo Leite, is spearheading a project to help remediate a local lake area devastated by the effects of climate change. The students will plant trees and educate the community and its local government leaders on their efforts.
- Brazil's Sergipe School is launching a campaign to preserve virgin forests in their region, and will target academic and government officials to spread their message.
- Mozambique's school is planning a campaign targeting the sulphur-emitting aluminum and steel factories, as well as the exhaust-emitting cars, which are causing serious air quality concerns in Maputo.
- Brazil's Massambara school plans to commence a recycling program, as well as to plant trees to counter the profound effects of deforestation in their community.
- Lakefield College School is proposing a "No Idle Zone" for the estimated one third of parents who leave cars idling while waiting to pick up their children from school. The students estimated the reduced CO2 emissions and fuel saved for Canadians by reducing idle times by only five minutes per day.
- Calgary's Langevin School is kicking off a campaign to reduce electricity and power consumption at their school, asking for lights and electronic equipment to be turned off when not in use.
