Los Angeles Virtual Academy Online Learning Initiative Results in Higher Passing Rates for Algebra Credit Recovery Students

Ft. Academic Edition™ to add synchronous content and connectivity for the District's online learning program (Los Angeles Virtual Academy — LAVA) and other Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) grant initiatives. LAUSD uses Elluminate Live! for faculty and grant meetings, instructor virtual office hours with individual students or groups of students, and to support additional educational programs the district is implementing.

To graduate, high school students in California must pass Algebra 1 as well as the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The second largest school district in the United States, LAUSD uses online learning as one mechanism to help students achieve in Mathematics. In addition to algebra tutoring and exam preparation, LAVA also offers high school and college-level, Advanced Placement (AP), courses. The online learning portal uses a blended onsite/online learning model that incorporates various technologies, such as Elluminate Live! Recently, LAUSD began implementing an Integrating Math, Science, and Technology (IMAST) grant in nine middle schools, using technology tools like Elluminate Live! to promote collaboration among participating teachers and help introduce innovative instructional technology practices into the classroom.
