Web Conferencing and Collaboration Software to Power Online Learning Initiative for Primary Schools Throughout Brazil
Calgary, Alberta, Canada, (August 31, 2006) —
Elluminate, Inc., a leading provider of live eLearning and web collaboration software,
announced today that it will work with the Telemar Institute, a not-for-profit
foundation created by the largest telecommunications company in Brazil, to pilot
a project to extend the reach and capabilities of the Telemar Virtual Learning Community.
The Community, sponsored by the Telemar Institute and operated by the School
of the Future at the University of Sao Paulo, is an online learning network
of 400 public primary schools located across 16 states throughout Brazil.
Starting September 1, 2006, Elluminate and the Community are launching a
Pilot Project to explore ways of using Elluminate
Live! Academic Edition,
a web conferencing technology that uses virtual classrooms to conduct sessions
online for K-12 schools and universities.
Sun Microsystems is also participating in the Pilot and will supply the computer
hardware to enable the School of the Future to host the Elluminate software at
the University of São Paulo.
The Pilot will consist of a series of courses, each highlighting a different
pedagogical strategy, to be taught by four primary schools in some of Brazil's
least developed and remote areas including:
- Itacoatiara - state of Amazonas
- Soure- state of Pará
- Muricy - state of Alagoas
- Tartarugalzinho - state of Amapá
By the end of the Pilot, the parties will explore the use of Elluminate
Live!
throughout the 177 representative schools.
In addition, one primary school in the Amazon was the benefactor of Elluminate's
Classroom of Tomorrow (COT), a technology-enabled classroom powered by Elluminate
Live! The COT will include a computer, LCD projector, interactive whiteboard,
microphone, speakers, and webcam. Yesterday, using the COT, primary school students
in the Amazon were able to connect with a guest speaker in Canada to discuss
environmental issues from each respective location, and work together to talk about
worldwide environmental themes. View the archived Elluminate session of yesterday's
class

"We're honored to be working with the Telemar Institute and the School of the Future
to connect Brazilian students to each other and the rest of the world," said
Stace Wills, Elluminate's director of corporate development.
"The fact that Elluminate
Live! can be used across any connection speed and
platform is working toward the Community's goal of providing an equal academic
opportunity to all 400 schools though the use of technology."
