Making Distance Learning Courses Accessible to Students with Disabilities

Issue isn't just whether students have access, but whether the communication is actually as effective as that provided to others. It's not just whether it's possible, but how usable it is.

Can students learn literacy effectively in the virtual classroom? The answer is a resounding YES! And this blog entry, “Legitimate Literacy Instruction in the Virtual School,” explains how.

Another great Fire & Ice event today from Stace and the gang at Elluminate. This time the event focus is on kids affected by war around the world. As described, "The Machinto project is based on a Japanese picture book about a little girl who is killed in the Hiroshima bomb in 1945.

Funny how life is isn't it. Sometimes a smallish idea can manifest into something that could be great. Sue Tapp set up a Flash meeting tonight for Oz educators as an opportunity to touch base and make some connections outside of our blogs and twitter. She planted a seed and didn't even know it. It was great and I want to publicly thank Sue for making the effort to get this meeting organised - 20 people participated and it was useful but we did have problems with the setup. This led to the always thinking Sue Waters moving to ustream and then elluminate to see if they worked any better.

Yesterday, I observed another Elluminate session facilitated by a virtual school AP U.S. History teacher. The session was scheduled for Saturday afternoon further highlighting the need for flexibility in the virtual teachers' work schedule.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending four hours in Elluminate with Sheryl and a dozen or so of the schools that we're working with from the Southeastern states for PLP holding a “work session” around the culminating projects they'll be presenting next month.

Adventures in Online Synchronous Communication - I am really loving Elluminate this year. The facility of audio, chat, whiteboard combined with being able to import PPT files and images, videos, take polls etc etc means it is a very powerful tool for synchronous work. Yes, I know it is expensive for a school, however don't forget the free V-Room that will take 3 people and is fully functional.
