Current Initiatives & Issues in Distance Learning:
Abstracts and Recorded Sessions

Director Center for Distance Education
Advantages of Near Synchronous Web Conferencing for very Remote Locations
Electronic communications offer enormous opportunities for design of learning environments. However, many locations do not have robust data connections to take advantage of all the online features. Remote Alaska villages vary widely in their quality of connectivity from slow dial-up that breaks often to broadband. We design online courses to overcome variable connectivity while keeping a high-touch education delivery.

Creating Ubiquitous Teaching, Learning and Work Environments
Broward County Public Schools has positioned itself at the forefront of the nation's distance learning arena. Whether through delivery of elementary and middle school daily videoconferencing classes or via the school district's use of audio-conferencing and videoconferencing collaborative tools, key stakeholders are consistently being offered 24/7 connectivity. The school district is positioned to take the lead in virtual education by offering a complete online middle school program in addition to its fully accredited, diploma offering online high school, Broward Virtual Education (BVEd). BVEd has received national recognition as grand prize winner of Cisco's 2004 Growing with Technology Award, as well as the 2005 United States Distance Learning Association's Bronze Award for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching. Other virtual initiatives include e-Learning Broward, online courses/programs for adult learners; and Broward Virtual University, which offers online professional development courses/programs for teachers.

The school district's Chief Information Officer, Manager of Conferencing Services and Project Manager: Technology and Instruction will detail how the school district, through its Information Technology Blueprint, continues to embed distance learning opportunities more deeply into classrooms, schools, and departments creating ubiquitous teaching, learning, and work environments.

Online Learning: Expansion Powering An Education Revolution
Online learning is more than a trend – it is revolutionizing global education. Countries with strong e-learning strategies will advance to help prepare students to reach their full potential in a digital age. Today's students want more options when it comes to education and online learning is providing new opportunities to expand options to every child, regardless of background or geography. Every child should have access to the best educational opportunities available, regardless of location. According to a 2005 report by U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), one-third (36 percent) of public school districts and 9 percent of public schools had students enrolled in distance education courses which contributed to the more than 328,000 course enrollments nationwide. The number of students taking classes online is predicted to grow to over 500,000 according to Eduventures. The session will take a look at the growing role of online learning for transforming education at large.

What's the Point?  Being Purposeful with Distance Learning Technologies
Futile as it seems, many technology initiatives seem to stem from the perception that we need to keep up with the Joneses (or Phoenixes or MITs). This presentation will provide a framework for thinking about the use of distance learning technologies to improve access to education, improve educational outcomes, and/or reduce costs.
