Electronic communications offer enormous opportunities for design of learning
environments. However, many locations do not have robust data connections to
take advantage of all the online features. Remote Alaska villages vary widely
in their quality of connectivity from slow dial-up that breaks often to broadband.
We design online courses to overcome variable connectivity while keeping a
high-touch education delivery.
Broward County Public Schools has positioned itself at the forefront of the nation's
distance learning arena. Whether through delivery of elementary and middle school daily
videoconferencing classes or via the school district's use of audio-conferencing and
videoconferencing collaborative tools, key stakeholders are consistently being offered
24/7 connectivity. The school district is positioned to take the lead in virtual
education by offering a complete online middle school program in addition to its fully
accredited, diploma offering online high school, Broward Virtual Education (BVEd).
BVEd has received national recognition as grand prize winner of Cisco's 2004 Growing
with Technology Award, as well as the 2005 United States Distance Learning Association's
Bronze Award for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching. Other virtual initiatives
include e-Learning Broward, online courses/programs for adult learners; and Broward
Virtual University, which offers online professional development courses/programs
for teachers.
The school district's Chief Information Officer, Manager of Conferencing Services
and Project Manager: Technology and Instruction will detail how the school district,
through its Information Technology Blueprint, continues to embed distance learning
opportunities more deeply into classrooms, schools, and departments creating ubiquitous
teaching, learning, and work environments.
Deakin University is a large university in Victoria, Australia with 33,000 students,
2000 faculty, 5 campuses and 40% of our students study at a distance. It has
progressively introduced a suite of technologies to support teaching, learning,
research and administration. This presentation will describe how and why we
have incorporated Elluminate Live! into this mix of technologies emphasizing
practical examples of how synchronous communication is helping us achieve our goals.
This session will explore and demonstrate how to use real-time learning and
collaboration tools to foster productive and meaningful knowledge exchange with
peers. Specific, original techniques for communication and knowledge sharing
will be showcased. We will also look at how online communities, podcasts, and
other forms of rich, asynchronous communication complete the picture.
Tips will be presented for teachers that will help engage their online students the
entire semester. A presentation of an orientation course that familiarizes students
with their online program and platform will be showcase as well.
This presentation will focus on how online learning is utilized in the second
largest school district in the nation. LAVA utilizes a hybrid or blending mode
l to deliver instruction to the students. The methodology and pedagogy of this
model will be discussed as well as lessons learned. There will also be a brief
overview of the current legislation governing online learning in K12 districts
within California.
Online learning is more than a trend – it is revolutionizing global education.
Countries with strong e-learning strategies will advance to help prepare students
to reach their full potential in a digital age. Today's students want more options
when it comes to education and online learning is providing new opportunities to expand
options to every child, regardless of background or geography. Every child should
have access to the best educational opportunities available, regardless of location.
According to a 2005 report by U.S. Department of Education's National Center for
Education Statistics (NCES), one-third (36 percent) of public school districts
and 9 percent of public schools had students enrolled in distance education
courses which contributed to the more than 328,000 course enrollments nationwide.
The number of students taking classes online is predicted to grow to over 500,000
according to Eduventures. The session will take a look at the growing role of
online learning for transforming education at large.
Note: this is a very large recording and may take a few mintues to begin playing.
The rush to deploy eLearning
strategies has left the landscape filled with the shells of online experiences
void of the human factor. This session will look at the presenters 21 year
experience teaching online and highlight how the human factor can be retained
and in fact enhanced.
MERLOT uses a 5-stage workflow model for the design and deliver of online
courses to identify what services faculty need to be successful in their
teaching and their students' learning. The workflow model will be presented
and MERLOT services will be demonstrated. The benefits of using MERLOT to
enhance the effectiveness of distance education, reduce the workload for
faculty and students, and improve the efficiencies for course design and
delivery will be reviewed.
New forms of collaboration services enabling the creation and sharing
of digital content on the web is growing at an exponential pace. Key
issues surrounding the authoring, sharing and long-term preservation
of educational and cultural materials and new forms of teaching is
creating new opportunities for worldwide learning.
This session is an overview of Sun's current project and investment
portfolio around the world in the areas of e-learning, digital libraries, gaming and entertainment.
Hawaii's students are geographically distributed and face
numerous challenges in seeking credentials through higher education.
Dr. McKimmy will discuss some of the specific challenges Hawaii
students face and describe current initiatives to meet their needs.
The continuous integration of technology resources and standards will be
discussed both for program improvements and for the support of distance
students.
This webinar/seminar will focus on sharing the details of a proven
new pedagogy that helps classroom learning & teacher efficiency in
grades 1-12. This technique can also be applied to the post-secondary
education arena. An actual example will be shown how this has improved
student grades, increased student participation and saved teachers time
in their normal course of teaching.
One of the biggest strengths of the Internet is connecting people together. In
our session, we will demonstrate how we have utilized Elluminate web conferencing
tools for professional development activities. Diane and Gail will share their
experiences of using a virtual classroom for meeting, training, and bringing
valuable resources to Pennsylvania educators. We offer three or more webinars
per month for teachers, librarians, students, technology staff and administrators.
Our typical session has 40-80 attendees from across the state. For example,
one session included well-known author/illustrator Peter Reynolds, connecting
70 classrooms and over 2000 students.
Futile as it seems, many technology initiatives seem to stem from
the perception that we need to keep up with the Joneses (or Phoenixes or MITs).
This presentation will provide a framework for thinking about the use of distance
learning technologies to improve access to education, improve educational outcomes,
and/or reduce costs.
